JISAO Internship Program

Nine Week Undergraduate Research Internship - Summer 2011

Applications due February 28!

Summer research opportunities are available for 5-7 undergraduate interns through JISAO and the NOAA Center for Atmospheric Sciences (NCAS). Interns are matched with a research project within one of JISAO's four research themes and work with a JISAO, NOAA or UW scientist at either the University of Washington campus or the NOAA Northwest Regional Center in Seattle. The internships are nine weeks long and a stipend, travel expenses, and housing are provided.

Applications are being accepted through February 28 with awards announced by April 30.

JISAO promotes work force diversity and the recruitment of under represented groups to participate in its programs.

Applicants must be US citizens or residents, be at least 18 years old, and have not yet graduated at the time of the internship.

2010 Interns

ANGEL ADAMES-CORRALIZA: Angel is from the University of Puerto Rico and studied aerosol optical properties with JISAO Director Dr. Tom Ackerman.

KORITA HUMPHRIES: Korita is from Claflin University and studied the effect of atmospheric chemistry on climate change with Dr. Becky Alexander in the UW department of atmospheric sciences.

2010 interns at Mt. RainierALEX KOWALESKI: Alex, from Davidson College, studied static stability in global climate models with Dargan Frierson in the UW department of atmospheric sciences.

NIKKI MARSCHKE: Nikki Marschke studied the diets of Pacific herring with Dr. David Beauchamp in the UW department of aquatic and fishery sciences. Nikki is from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

COLE PERKINSON: Cole is from Reed College and studied aluminum concentrations in water collected near underwater volcanos in the Pacific Ocean. His mentor was JISAO scientist Dr. Joe Resing at NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Lab.

KELSEY POWERS: Kelsey is a UW student and spent her internship collecting and studying orca whale scat in the San Juan Islands. UW graduate student Jessica Lundin was her mentor.

KYLE THOMAS: Kyle is from Texas Southern University. He studied the biological processes of sediment in lakes, bogs, and oceans with Dr. Julian Sachs, a scientist in UW's department of oceanography.

CILER Great Lakes Summer Fellows Program - 2011

The Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystems Research (CILER), located at the University of Michigan, announces the 2011 Great Lakes Summer Student Fellowship Program. This summer fellowship program provides undergraduate and graduate students with a broad range of fields and an exciting opportunity to conduct research in the Great Lakes Region under the mentorship of an individual scientist or professional.
