PMEL's Phyllis Stabeno and Eddie Bernard receive Department of Commerce Bronze Medals

Dr. Phyllis J. Stabeno (along with William Parker, William Floering and Carol Dewitt) from NOAA's PMEL, has been awarded the Department of Commerce's Bronze Medal “for scientific and technical achievements that have advanced NOAA’s ability to detect Arctic climate change and its effect on the Bering Sea ecosystem.”

Dr. Stabeno is a critical leader at the Fisheries-Oceanography Coordinated Investigations (FOCI) program--a joint PMEL and Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) effort started by NOAA to study relationships between the marine environment and the survival of commercially valuable fish in the western Gulf of Alaska. JISAO employees work side by side with NOAA ones on this ongoing effort.

PMEL director Dr. Eddie N. Bernard was also recognized, along with David McKinnie and others, “for outstanding contributions in the deployment of the first DART buoy for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System, protecting lives and property.”
