JISAO TASK PROGRAMS
Task I - Cooperative Agreement
Task I is the JISAO post-doctoral research associate and visiting scientist program. This program maintains 2-3 postdocs in residence at any given time on one-year appointments, which are ordinarily renewable for a second year. JISAO visiting scientists are researchers from both foreign and domestic institutions who come to JISAO to collaborate with our faculty and research scientists. There are also a considerable number of visiting scientists (mostly those from foreign countries) who come to JISAO with their own funding.
Task I is also a vehicle for specific NOAA-funded projects that do not fit into the other tasks. Recent examples of this are the Second International Conference on Climate Impacts Assessment and the Special Presidential Award to Research Scientist Nathan Mantua.
Task II - Cooperative Agreement
The Task II program is the collaborative research between UW and NOAA that takes place onsite at the Pacific Marine Environmental Lab (PMEL), the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) and the National Marine Mammal Laboratory (NMML)-all of which are located at the NOAA Western Regional Center, here in Seattle. It also involves work with the Northwest Fisheries Center (NWFS) located in the Montlake neighborhood in Seattle. UW research scientists usually work side-by-side with Federal NOAA staff on these research projects.
Task III - Cooperative Agreement
Task III is the vehicle in which the UW faculty-initiated research projects that fit within JISAO's broad research themes are funded by NOAA. These currently consist of approximately 30 distinct research projects headed by Principal Investigators (PIs) in various UW schools and departments (e.g., the Atmospheric Sciences, the School of Oceanography, School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, APL, Civil and Environmental Engineering, etc.) that range in size from $30K to $2.7M, and much as in Task II, run for various lengths of time, and can cross over from one 5-year contract to the next making management of them more complex. Each research project is given an individual UW budget and has its own PI, and the funding all originates directly from NOAA.
Task IV - Non-Cooperative Agreement and State Budgets
The Task IV research program consists of the grants, contracts and other budgets (e.g., state and private funds) that are funded outside the NOAA Cooperative Agreement. There are currently 6 research scientists located at PMEL who have PI status, plus another 6 UW faculty members housed at JISAO who all submit grant proposals and conduct business through JISAO Task IV.
