Angie Opiola: Fieldwork Expands Opportunities - Summer Research 2001 and 2002
opiola

Angie Opiola worked with JISAO research scientist Joe Resing during summer 2001 and 2002 when she was an undergraduate student in the Environmental Science Department at DePaul University. Ms. Opiola participated in two research cruises traveling to the Juan de Fuca Plate and also to Exploration Ridge in the hydrothermal vent complex known as "Magic Mountain." Opiola was part of a research team studying hydrothermal plume activity

During both cruises Opiola collected water samples to test salinity, alkalinity, and the presence of trace metals vs. dissolved metals.  Opiola worked with data entry and learned about sonar mapping and how to plot the CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) instrument. The team employed a "tow-yo" technique when gathering data.  As the ship towed a CTD and nephelometer, the cable attached to the instruments was reeled up and down—to a depth of up to 2000m—mimicking the motion of a yo-yo.  The CTD measured water temperature and salinity and the nephelometer measured particulate matter in the water.

While at sea the scientists on board took time to teach Ms. Opiola about their particular area of expertise and to explain how it fits into the larger research picture.  Opiola learned about new instrumentation—nephelometer, magnetic sensor, and the underwater vehicle ABE (autonomous benthic explorer).  She had the unique opportunity to assist scientists with their research in the field while furthering her educational experience.  During her summer research internship, Opiola was able to take what she learned in school and apply it to real research.  She describes her experience working with Dr. Resing as both inspiring and beneficial to her future career.

Ms. Opiola is currently the Environmental Education Specialist at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie in Wilmington, IL.
